"New" Part 1 provides a review of the importance of public confidence as a tool for policy assessment. Data were obtained from a questionnaire completed by 115 experts in the seven countries, including academics, researchers, criminal justice managers, and members of parliament and other government officials. Findings indicate that in all of the countries except the U.K., most respondents feel that the existing indicators are not comprehensive enough to meet the needs of policy makers. Part 2 contains reviews of literature – including research literature from the U.S. – on current indicators of public confidence in justice systems and on the public’s fear of crime. Part 3 presents a review of current indicators of public confidence at the multinational level, including the International Crime Victimisation Survey and the European Social Survey. |
