Countering Terrorism through Situational Crime Prevention (Crime Prevention Studies, volume 25)
Joshua Freilich and Graeme R. Newman, eds.
(paperback)
2009, 220 pages
ISBN: 978-1-881798-94-1
$42.50

The theme of this volume is that situational prevention techniques that have proven successful against many other types of crime are also effective in reducing terrorism, which is defined as “crime with a political motive.” Situational prevention involves altering environments either to block opportunities to commit terrorist attacks or to reduce cues motivating potential terrorists to commit such acts. The editors’ introduction asserts that, “… SCP should emerge as a significant approach to solving the problem of terrorism.” The authors represent a mix of leading SCP scholars and noted terrorism researchers. Chapters include:
"Introduction" (Joshua Freilich & Graeme Newman;
"Twenty-Eight Articles: Fundamentals of Company-level Insurgency" (David Kilkullen);
"Reducing Terrorist Opportunities: A Framework for Foreign Policy" (Graeme Newman);
"Spatio-Temporal modeling of Insurgency in Iraq" (Shane Johnson & Alex Braithwaite);
"An Application of SCP to Terrorist hostage taking and kidnapping: A case study of 23 Korean hostages in Afghanistan" (Minwoo Yun);
