This research describes health care services in the prison systems of Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. Specifically, the study undertook to: a) review the health services and initiatives operating within two sample prisons in each country; b) describe the services available for drug-dependent prisoners; c) relate the provision of health services to Council of Europe and World Health Organization guidelines as well as national strategies in each country; and d) promote awareness of the initiatives in the sample prisons and facilitate the sharing of best practices on the national and international levels. Data were obtained from field visits to prisons and key non-governmental organizations working in the area of drug addiction, as well as from official records.
